i've just been looking for species lists for japan, and while it's been difficult to get a comprehensive list, i've noticed that there are trevally in the seas around japan. is this the case? and are there any other game fish other than the ever popular bass in the seas around kanto?
I'm looking to be going after tthem with fly gear so any info would be appreciated, tackle for various species GENERAL locations etc. ideally i'd like to fish from the shore or maybe froma skiff over reef/flat areas if possible.
cheers

Marty,
Trevally are going to be in south western Japan and Okinawa. I heard that 15~20 years ago you could catch them around the Kanto area but not now. Depending on the season, the Kanto area has, of course sea bass, then there are yellowtail, skip jack, yellow and blue fin tuna, dolphin, marlin, sailfish, flounder, flathead, porgy, cutlass fish, snapper. Lot's of other smaller game as well.
There are "reefs" in the kanto area but not many living coral reefs so they don't particularly hold a lot of fish. There are a few boats that will take you out to fly fish for sea bass otherwise you would have to arrange something special to go after other game. Summer is the best for the palegics. Sagami bay, southeast of Tokyo, is fair but spotty. I don't have much experience outside of there so I can't reccomend much else. There is a guy on this forum, "z-finman" who does fly fishing from shore when he is on lay-overs from the US. Check his posts for some info.
Your best bet for good action would be to get a private charter to chase dolphin in the summer time. You can find them on the surface when conditions are right and they will hit just about anything.
Good luck,
later, maineman
