Fish Identification

Postby Echo5Lima » Thu Aug 13, 2009 7:42 pm

Does anyone know where I can get some of those plastic (~8.5 x 11) color cards that help identify fish?
Wife and I have caught 2 or 3 fish that we can't identify. Thought it would be helpful to take along.

We've looked around and can't find it anywhere in the Nagoya area.

I don't know about the plastic cards but if you go to a good sized book store or tackle shop they will have a fishing book section and they will have game fish ID books. I have a couple different books but the one I like is a pocket sized paperback that focuses on telling the difference between closely related species but it has good color pictures of all the common sw game fish in Japan. I would tell you the name of it if I could read kanji but I can't. On the cover it has a small magnifying glass and says "kokode miwakiyou" (distinguish) and it has a picture of two Kurodai (black porgy) on the cover.
Also if you post a picture of the fish you caught on this site I am sure you will get some answers.

When I first came to Japan there were two books I bought right away...I mean these fish were so foreign to me.

Fishing Methods Book

Fishing in Japan (color)

FLIP THREW HERE

The first book explains methods, knots and common fish you can target. The second book is just a complete book of fish, how big they get and their life span. Also explains common fishing methods all in wonderful color.

Get those two books and you'll be set...

Aki, Thanks! That is the book I have. I like it because it is not too big to take with you fishing if you want to. If you don't read Japanese you may have someone who does translate some of the categories for you. I like that it tells you if the fish is edible and how good eating it is.
