What are your fishing goals for 2010?

Postby Fisherkingnigel » Mon May 24, 2010 11:44 pm

What do you want to accomplish this year when it comes to fishing?

Some of us have totally different ideas on this one but I thought it would be fun to hear what you guys have to say.

My goals are to win this years All Kyushu Otoshikomi Tournament in Kumamoto and to get a big ass tuna...

Tight lines,

Here are some of my fishing goals for 2010:

1. Catch a sea bass from the beach in front of my house. They don't show up very often.
2. Tuna, any size. 20kg Kihada would be nice.
3. Kanpachi...never caught one.
4. Visit Okinawa to GO FISHING, not be a tourist.
5. Get enough guys from around here together to charter a Yellowtail Jigging trip.
6. Buy an Outrigger X9 Pontoon boat.

almost forgot #7. November--Fukuoka---Jigging with Nigel---Sumo Kyushu Basho and Ramen.
Things I Have Caught: 1 diaper, 6 trees, a seagull, and a boat-mast.

Game On Man!! Sounds like a great couple of days...

Lets do it and not just talk about, I love going to Sumo. It's the only place in Japan where I feel small :kik:

I have never been a huge fan of trolling but because the fisherys in Sagami bay are so pressured I will be hunting billfish most weekends this summer and I'm already entered in the JIBT in July. Biggest billfish I have caught was a 90lb marlin off the Atantic coast so let's see if I can top that.

Good Luck MM and I hope you get the one they dream of. Never did the marlin thing but that's sure on my list of things to hit/target before I die

Who's boat are you going to go on, usually it's quite expensive because you have to troll all day...

Got lucky in the boat department. My wifes co-worker has a 40ft Yamaha convertible at Ito Marina. He has all the big trolling gear, four 80lb rigs and two 60lb rigs. All he asks is to share gas so with a crew of 4 or 5 it's about 5000 yen apiece. This year is his first year to enter his own boat in the JIBT so we will be going to Shimoda for 4 days and give it a go. In the mean time he fishes almost every weekend, sometimes both days.

Hey Maineman, you're going to Shimoda? Look for a strange jazz bar, don't remember the name, but it's straight out of the '70s. Crazy place! Owner is a riot!

Good luck with the trolling.
Here's a tip: With dead bait, use a disposable weight (not lead, maybe a brick). Bait your hook straight to the leader. Somewhere on a swivel or hook-eye, tie a lengthy piece of thread or dental floss.
To this thin line, attach a Lifesaver candy, then tie another line to your disposable weight. Carefully lower the weight and bait into the water and release.
This system gets your bait to the bottom quickly. When the lifesaver melts, the weight falls off and your bait will casually drift to the surface thru the water column. It saves wear and tear on your equipment.

cheers...Pat

Pat, Thanks for the tip! Never heard of that one. One thing I have tried in the past is using a trolling ball release in reverse. Instead of the lead ball I use a bag of sand tied with a string to a solid ring which goes in the release. Because the release is in reverse a strong tug on the rod will release the sand bag when it hits bottom or at the depth you want. Same idea.

The Japan International Billfish Tournament runs 3 days July 16~18 in Shimoda. Along with the fishing there is some pretty good partying every night. Should be a good time. So far this year conditions are looking good with the Black current pulling in close to shore. Already a report of a 123kg blue marlin caught in the area. Last Sat we were out on a practice run and caught a 1m dorado bull so we know the palegics are moving in. I'll be taking video gear along on our trips so how to get some good action clips to post later.

Cheers, maineman

MM if you ever need video editing help I'm there for you man...I can edit if need be. Would love to get your Marlin catching video all done up nice and sweet.

I've heard of that lifesaver trick of yours before Pat, does make for some fun fishing all weight free. So I wonder how long would it take to dissolve?

Pat what's your goal, never heard yours :?:
