my first catch (snag) in Japan

Postby timmy96815 » Mon Jun 21, 2010 3:04 pm

snagged a pretty good size bora today in the canal at hamadera koen. snagged it just on the rear side of the dorsal fin. I was using that little bucket with the little shrimp in it and the lure with about 6 little fake shrimp on it.

I saw something about 18 inches swimming around the lures down there but it was cloudy so I really wasn:t sure if it even was my imagination. I kept baiting and dropping the thing down. Pretty soon I felt something but not quite like a bite then it started takikng line slowley. I forgot I was on my kids pole and the drag wasn:t set. I tightend it just a little at first and stopped its weak run. super quick I realed it to me. I was suprised at how weak it was. Maybe because I snagged it or it was old or whatever. when I went to remove the hook it made a dash and ripped the line just where it is attached to the main shaft line.

So lessons learned;

Bora were feeding on the little shrimp? But everybody told me it is a veggie?

I:m confused. so this fish will eat anything?

Thanks
Jeff

We catch Bora (Striped Mullet) here on green algae from freshwater ponds, or good old fashioned white bread. I've seen them chasing my lure, and even snagged them but I think their curiosity got the best of them and wasn't an intentional bite. Grew up throw (cast) netting them, pretty decent steamed if from clean waters.

i've caught lots of bora (mullets) in tokyo bay using simple sabiki rigs filled with komase (little shrimp).
they're decent eating if caught from clean waters but i wouldn't recommend eating the ones out of the bay.
they're a lot of fun to catch though!
