Fly Fishing on the Abukuma River - Advice please!

Postby Scotsman » Sun Jun 27, 2010 9:39 am

Hi all, i wonder if you guys can help me. I came across this site and thought this would be the best place to get some advice! I live in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Ken, very close to the Abukuma River. I used to Fly-fish back in the UK and would love to get back into it here since i live only a few mins from some lovely stretches of water. I saw some guys out over the last few days so it looks to be a fairly well fished spot. The thing is i have no clue as to what permits etc (If any?) i would need to enable me to start fishing there? Where would i get info? What would you guys advise? What sort of Tackle should i buy? Are you likely to get Trout and /or salmon, What else?

Thanks in Advance!

As regards permits:

I don't know anything about your particular river, but the important thing is to find out if it is managed by a fisheries co-op or not; you will need a permit in the former case. Your best bet is to ask at a local fishing store or even anglers at the day's end.
Also, there are also closed seasons for species like ayu or char, and these depend on the river.

yup I agree, you gotta ask your local fishing store what the rules are for that river. For instance I have a river I frequent in Hita Japan and I know before I go out I have to buy a one day perfmit for 300 yen. It's really rare for rivers to do that but it's basically to support the local fishing co-operative in stocking and managing rivers in Japan.

Good luck,

In some places local men may practise on out-of-town anglers and demand payment of the day fee - a genuine fisheries worker should show you his ID and you should be given a permit in return. This is not common, but I have heard of it more than once.
