Chigasaki. Bait fish on the beach

Postby Maineman » Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:03 am

One of those special times in Chigasaki when millions of bait fish migrate close to the shore. Two days ago I caught about 20 wakashi in an hour. Yesterday it was saba and tonight latched onto a nice sea bass, 75cm. Also caught a nice ichimochi and a bunch of dumb bora. Probably won’t last long but if you are in the neighborhood give it a go. If you know the area try the headlands breakwater. Look for the birds and boils.
Catch ya later, Maineman

Hey Maineman,
Nice sea bass,.....that one's got some shoulders on it...! The sea bass caught in the surf always seem a little "beefier" than the Tokyo BAY skinies.

Boils from the surf are an extra fun treat...........hope the bait sticks around for you.

When I first saw the fish in the water I thought it might be a Hirasuzuki (blackfin sea bass). We have those around Chigasaki sometimes. Once I got it on the beach I could tell it was a maru because there were no black fin markings and too greenish yellow on the back although it was a hefty one with tall shoulders. I have often wondered if there could be a hybrid seabass especially where the two live in the same waters. Probably wouldn't occur naturally but some wacky scientist could likely come-up with one.

Considering KAWASAKI (heavy industrial area near Haneda airport) had the worst air pollution (acid rain) in the world....!!!! (1970s World Guniess Book of Records) and some unheard of water pollution,............I'd have to agree with you and say there's nothing natural about some possible mutant fish in that area and in Tokyo Bay.

I used to night fish Kawasaki from my buddie's skiff back in the early 80's and we'd catch small barracuda (KAMASU), small GT (RONIN AJI) and other exotics along with monster sea bass over a meter long on a regular basis. The warm water factory outlets that spilled into KAWASAKI were our number one points to cast.

In those days you didn't eat anything from Tokyo Bay. I'm glad to say things have really cleaned up since then but the mutant fish possiblity always kept me wondering about some of those deformed fish we used to catch....

Two headed fish caught in Kawasaki.........news at 11:00.......!!!

Gary,
Can you send some pictures of the fish you have been catching lately to my ship email address. For some reason I can't see certain pictures that are posted here. I sent an email to your personal account.

I was using a small Skill Jig 5cm, 12gms. Sardine color. When things started to slow down I put a trailer on a small jig with a 2cm salt water fly, glass minnow. Caught a couple on that fly as well.

I caught the seabass on a metal casting jig as well. I was bouncing it off the sandy bottom when it hit. Water was only about 1 meter deep.

Have you heard any catch reports of katsuo or tuna this weekend? I'm hoping they will show-up soon. I'ld like for those big 25~35kg tuna to show-up again this year. Maybe later in the fall.

I hear you Maineman...!!! Those bigger units are a blast to pull on. It's not often you can catch a fish in the 20 to 30kg class on a day boat, fly lining a sardine, a couple miles offshore.......reminds me of the San Diego long range tuna boats.

the reports i heard of were from a hayama boat. havent been on a noriai fune for a long time. many years ago the place to go was nagai suejimaru. seems like everyone is using the hayama boat these days? sounds like the hayama boat i heading out at 246 to morth of what i call the twin titties. if that the only place their going then dont expect to catch much. sagami bay has a lot of pints and the fish could be anywhere on any goven day. but i will tell you the fish are out there. if they are not catching them its because the boat is not finding them. im gonna take a run out to nagai and check the boats today will let u know whats cookin.

PBM,
I believe you're right, the fish are out there somewhere but if they aren't pushing the bait to the surface so the birds, and then the boats, can find them, it's going to be hard. Even if a captain spots fish on the finder most guys aren't set-up to fish at depth. Maybe drop some jigs and hope for the best. That typhoon likely pushed some warm water into the bay. Let's see what happens in the next few days.

Many of the party boats did pretty well on Katsuo on the 3rd. Fukada-maru did the best with 41-81 katsuo. Even the light lure part boat of Asahachi-maru did great with upto 20 katsuo on 3hour trip. Souyou-maru is reporting YFT blitz in the bay, but it was gone before they could get there. Tuna action is still dead after typhoon, but I guess it can jump start anyday.

Aki,

My buddy is going for katsuo today out of Chigasaki. We'll see how he does.
For the sea bass action, if there is any, about an hour before and hour after high tide has been best. HT today is 5:15PM.

Nice fish! Definitely has some bigger shoulders than most 70+ cm seabass. On the downhill slope of my Afghanistan trip and hoping to wet a line sooner rather than later.
